The historical transmission of the Odyssey from the normative aspect of the myth
Keywords:
Odyssey, Ulysses, classical tradition, ethics, international lawAbstract
One of the central themes throughout the Odyssey is the way in which foreigners should be treated. The parallelism of this issue with current concepts of international law as the minimum standard, as well as the original references made to the Odyssey in "De jure belli ac pacis" by Hugo Grotius, highlight the normative significance and the moralizing purpose of the epic story. As a model for the construction of a primitive international morality, the work by Homer contains a transcending ethical aspect which is added in a delicious synapsis to its undisputed value for esthetics, literature and art history.Downloads
